  • Gabe Lambert grieves the loss of his grandfather, with his children, Luka, 8, front, Anson, 6, back, and Mya, 7, right, at the site of house fire at 738 Strawberry Hill Road in Evansville on Wednesday, March 21, 2012.  Donald R. Lambert, 81, perished in the fire that destroyed his home and his neighbor's home and damaged several others in the neighborhood.  Lambert's son, Greg, not pictured, made and placed a cross to honor his father in front of the destroyed home.

Campbell, Kentucky, was one of six soldiers killed on Nov. 29 in Afghanistan when a rogue Afghan border policeman turned his gun on his American trainers as the group headed to shooting practice.
  • Jessica Wirth is tended to by the St. Mary's Medical Center staff as she makes her way to the chapel for a commitment ceremony to Daniel Lawrence, her partner of seven years, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville on Thursday, January 13, 2011. Wirth had surgery on Wednesday and has advanced gastric cancer. With the help of family, friends and the staff at St. Mary's, the ceremony was put together in under twenty-four hours. Only two days later on Saturday January, 15, 2011, Jessica passed away at 7:35 p.m. surrounded by her family and friends.  The couple has a son, Colton, 18 months.

I'm just so grateful they found it,{quote} said Judy Hudnall after a military flag, which belonged to her deceased brother, Jim Wolf, was found in a field not far from an Ohio River camp off Nugent Drive near Ellis Park in Henderson County, Kentucky, on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.  A strong line of storms moved through the area early Wednesday morning destroying several river camp dwellings. Hudnall's brother, Gene Pickerill, not pictured, was one of the residents who lost his home.

  • Winifred Phillips, who is renting the home at 4901 Shady Pine Drive in Greensboro, is comforted by friends and neighbors after the home caught fire on Wednesday, December 13, 2006.  Phillips sustained minor burns to her hand but was otherwise unharmed.

  • Wes Mofield tries to stay dry as he stands in his grandmother's living room at 106 S. Weber Drive in Haubstadt, Ind. Family members believe a tornado hit the home when a line of severe storms blew through the area the night before.
  • Bea Belcher receives communion from Sister Carolyn Martin recently at St. John’s Home for the Aged, which is run by Little Sisters of the Poor, in Evansville. Belcher, who started in the independent living apartments in 1987, has been at the facility for 25 years. “They’ve always been so good to me here,” she said. Last spring the Little Sisters announced that they planned to withdraw from operating the home once they found a suitable sponsor to take over. They are still searching and continue to seek financial donations for the home.

I fish in there,{quote} said Smith, who picked up a couple of tires and other would-be pollutants.

  • Angelica Fulchini, 13, back, gets in a nap, while fellow ballet dancer, Shanna Ward, 13, gives a hand massage to dancer Allegra Coryell, 15, before their end of the year classical ballet demonstration at the Grand Harbor Clubhouse in Vero Beach on Tuesday night.  The girls were selected by audition to become members of Ballet Vero, a classical ballet school started just over a year ago.  Lewis Grove, Director of Ballet Vero, realizes the potential of these top dancers.  {quote}They have the potential to go wherever their dreams take them,{quote} said Grove.

  • The Wall That Heals, a 300-foot half-scale replica of the actual Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., has been at the Indian River County Fairgrounds in Vero Beach since Wednesday, January 25, 2017.  The traveling display is free and open to the public, 24 hours a day until 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2017. This national traveling memorial honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. armed forces during the Vietnam War and its walls bear the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Vero Beach is The Wall’s only Florida stop.

  • Lessie Overstreet calms her son, Christopher Russell, 3, during the 11-hour bus ride from a Red Cross shelter in Crestview, Florida, to their new home in Vero Beach, Florida.  Displaced from their home in Mississippi by Hurrincane Katrina, Overstreet and her family relocated to Florida with the help of Vero Beach businessman, David Kravitz, who raised over $40,000 to help families who were left homeless after the hurricane.
  • Dana Mace, center, and her husband, Ron, right, lead the Lion of Judah Praise Warriors in a dance during a fish fry fundraiser in Riverside Park in Vero Beach.  The event, which was organized by New Hope Ministries, is a fundraiser for youth pastor, Jerry West, who was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer several months ago.  West does not have health insurance and needs to have a bone marrow transplant.

  • Wabasso resident, Ardile Black, works in her prized garden behind her house recently.  Black, 85, lives with her husband Charles, 91, in a house she inherited from relatives over two decades ago.  The aged couple is no longer able to take care of the necessary maintenance on such an old house.

  • I couldn't publish their names but I did get their story.  He has Alzheimer's and is still married to a woman outside the nursing facility where he lives.  He doesn't remember his wife but he does know the woman sitting next to him on the couch.  She lives in the same nursing facility and also has difficulties with her memory.  He sees her everyday and everyday they spend time together on the couch holding hands.  Because he is still married, some of the other residents look down on their relationship.
